Dick attended the University of Vermont and graduated from New York State Veterinary College at Cornell University. He interned in the large animal ambulatory clinic at Cornell before joining the faculty at the University of Pennsylvania, New Bolton Center for Large Animals. In addition to his clinical teaching responsibilities Dick was Head of the Large Animal Field Service and the Reproduction Department.

Dick and his wife Pat returned to Vermont in 2005. He taught Herd Health Management at Vermont Technical College for four years. He continues to work as a part-time consultant and clinician for his son, Rick, and daughter-in-law Amy.
