Equine Acupuncture Services

Dr. Amy Bartholomew is a Certified Veterinary Acupuncturist (CVA). She received her certification from the Chi Institute of Chinese Veterinary Medicine (www.tcvm.com) in Reddick. Florida. Dr. Bartholomew’s training enables Cold Hollow Veterinary Services to offer alternative, non-invasive treatments for pain and disease in both equine and bovine patients.

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is the stimulation of certain points along the body called Shu Xue, or “communicating holes”. Although these points have been used for thousands of years, it is only recently that we discovered that many acupoints are located where there are higher concentrations of nerves, mast cells, connective tissue, lymph ducts, and blood vessels.

What can acupuncture treat?

Acupuncture can be used in an integrated approach along with conventional veterinary medicine. Using acupuncture can help reduce recovery time for many diseases or injuries. The addition of acupuncture may decrease the dose of conventional medicine such as steroids or anti-inflammatories. On organic farms, where traditional veterinary medicine cannot be used, acupuncture allows Cold Hollow to treat animals without using hormones or antibiotics.

Some equine conditions that veterinary acupuncture can improve or diminish are as follows:

  • Lameness
  • Arthritis
  • Sore Backs
  • Tendon/Ligament Issues
  • Laminitis
  • Endocrine Disorders such as Cushing’s Disease and Equine Metabolic Syndrome
  • Navicular Disease
  • Neurologic Conditions
  • Stomach Ulcers
  • Uveitis or “Moon blindness”
  • Tying Up Syndrome
  • Problems Sweating
  • Skin Allergies
  • Immunodeficiency
  • Fertility Problems
  • Behavioral Issues
